Who we are

About 444 (Shoreditch) Squadron

We are part of the Air Training Corps – a national youth organisation for young people aged between 13 – 20 who enjoy adventure, aerospace and excitement.

The unit has a long and distinguished history helping young people from the East End of London for over 70 years and have over 40 cadets who take part in a variety of activities including flying, gliding, adventurous training, sports and leadership exercise.

444 (Shoreditch) Squadron operates from a purpose built building in Crondall Street, Hoxton. 444 (Mile End) Detached Flight is part of 444 (Shoreditch) Squadron and is based in Bow and operates from the Mile End TA Centre taking advantage of the many facilities available on the site.

We’re sponsored by the Royal Air Force and can give you hands-on experience of activities and courses that will challenge and develop your skills to help you succeed in whatever you want to do.

We have many successes to our name, not least as a multiple Lees Trophy winner as the best UK squadron, a Dacre Sword winner (best male cadet) and the Dacre Broach (best female cadet).

Although some cadets aspire to join the armed forces, many have other careers in mind. Whichever direction your future lies, 444 cadets find the experience and training gained during their time with us to be memorable, fun and vital in terms of equipping our cadets with the skills to help you achieve you future career ambitions.

The aim of the Air Training Corps are to:

  • Promote and encourage a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force among young people
  • Provide training which will be useful in the Services and civilian life
  • Encourage the spirit of adventure and develop qualities of leadership and good citizenship
