Cadets attend inter-squadron training day at Woolwich Barracks

Published by Coralie on March 25th, 2012 - in Uncategorized

25 cadets from 444, 12F, 56 and 291 Squadrons recently enjoyed a day on the range and obstacle course; honing their marksmanship and teamwork skills at Woolwich Barracks.

On the obstacle course, cadets were trained in how to overcome obstacles such as the 12 foot wall, catwalks and cargo nets. The cadetswere in groups of 4 or 5, and really had to work together to help the whole team to overcome the obstacles. All teams successfully completed the entire course, and even the more experience teams dramatically improved their performance, as they were coached in new techniques throughout the day.

Another highly successful activity on offer was the opportunity for cadets to practice their marksmanship skills on the Dismounted Close Combat Trainer (DCCT) Range, at the barracks. The range allows firers to perfect their target shooting – L98A2 weapons are used, although rather than live fire, the rifles use lasers to fire at targets on a screen at the back of a range. These lasers are picked up by the computer system operating the range, which can give detailed feedback on the precision, consistency, and aiming of the weapon. Combined with careful instruction from the staff, cadets can see marked improvement in their ability to hit targets, after just a very short period of training on this range.

Published by oc.444 on January 30th, 2012 - in Squadron News, Uncategorized

4 Cadets from 444 have recently sat and passed their Cadet Method of Instruction (CMOI) Course.

The Course was ran by Wing and gives the cadets a crash course in Presentation and lesson delivering skills. After completing the Course, and doing a 10 minute presentation to the Staff at Squadron, the Cadets were presented their coveted lanyards by the OC. The CMOI Course is the final hurdle when it comes to classifications meaning the cadet in question is now a staff cadet, and their responsibility shifts from learning, to teaching! These are the first cadets from 444 to be awarded their lanyards since the system changed last year, and are the first staff cadets to be on the squadron in almost 3 years!

Well done to Sergeant Agboola, Corporal Gray, Sergeant Carney and Corporal Zhang!

444 Squadron pay their respects

Published by oc.444 on November 28th, 2011 - in Ceremonial

The Squadron paid its respects to British and Commonwealth war dead during Remembrance Sunday at the beginning of the month. Cadets, NCO’s and staff formed one of the largest contingents to the local parade which took place along Mare Street in Hackney. The Parade formed at Hackney Town hall, and marched the half mile route along Mare Street, down the Narrow Way to the church of St John in Hackney where a Service of Remembrance was held. A wreath for the Squadron was laid by Cadet Sheri Kryeziu, and one for the Volunteer Reserve Branch of the Royal Air Force was laid by Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant Anthony Barker. After the service cadets marched back to the town hall where a second wreath was laid in honour of the Borough.

It is worth mentioning that the Borough of Hackney lost thousands of young men during the First world war, and suffered horrendous Civilian casualties during the Blitz and consequent fighting of World War two, and this was not lost on cadets as after the parade they retired to the General Browning Club on Morning Lane for light refreshments and war stories.
